Info
Yaima is a Cascadian folktronic duo based in Seattle, Washington, formed in 2014. The group comprises multi-instrumentalist and producer Masaru Higasa and vocalist Pepper Proud. Their music is often described as timeless and unmistakable, offering a balanced synergy of both masculine and feminine expressions. They blend instruments from around the world, creating melodious soundscapes inspired by the majesty of nature.
Members:
- Masaru Higasa: Born on the mystical island of Okinawa, Japan, Masaru was first inspired to play the music of his ancestors. He later moved to the United States and has been involved in electronic music production, focusing on drone-based compositions that induce trance-like states.
- Pepper Proud: Hailing from the Appalachian hills of West Virginia, Pepper grew up immersed in Appalachian music traditions, where community gatherings often involved playing instruments like the banjo, mandolin, and guitar. She considers herself a storyteller, weaving themes of ecology, world peace, and evolution into her lyrics.
Musical Style and Influences:
Yaima’s music is a fusion of earthy folk traditions and electronic elements, creating immersive soundscapes that are deeply atmospheric. Their compositions often feature acoustic instruments such as flutes and guitars, layered with electronic beats and ethereal vocals. Drawing inspiration from the majesty of nature, their music envelops the listener with captivating and revitalizing organic rhythms, transcendent electronic production, warm soothing female vocals, and heartfelt lyricism. Their intention is to create a bridge between nature and humanity, offering an expansive experience that encourages growth and graceful passage for the hearts and minds of their listeners.
Yaima’s discography includes albums that reflect and illustrate nature, with each album created with intention and acknowledgment for the elements—water, wind, fire, and earth. Their first album, “Pellucidity” (2014), is described as a beauteous and bewitching collection of stories that lead the listener on a journey through enticing soundscapes and floating melodies. The term “pellucidity” means to allow the maximum passage of light, to see clearly, as clear as fresh water in a mountain lake. This album was created for the water and for the peaceful being inside of us all.
Live Performances:
Yaima has performed at various venues and festivals, creating deeply captivating and finely tuned experiences for their audiences. Their live performances allow listeners to journey through sonic soundscapes, traversing sensually stimulating and heart-centered compositions that inspire each listener to return to their truth.
Name Origin:
The name “Yaima” emerges from two sources: one from the Mapudungun language, meaning “that which water runs through,” and the other from the culturally preserved Yaeyama District of Okinawa, Japan.

Jan carefully layers melodies, harmonies, and rhythmic textures, creating a rich and immersive experience that builds, evolves, and transforms before your very ears. The result is an ever-changing, hypnotic flow of sound.
